Discovery Bay Ranch is the home of Mas Ass Acres. We are located on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. More precisely in a very small community called Gardiner, overlooking Discovery Bay. It is home to Patti and Sam Kyle, 12 miniature donkeys, 20 mammoth donkeys, 4 mules, 2 horses, 3 longhorns, 3 dogs, 4 cats, and a multitude of ducks and other wildlife too numerous to mention. We are in an area called the banana belt because it receives an average of 17" of rain a year.

The temperatures remain fairly moderate ranging from a high of 85 degrees in the summer and although extremely rare, it has been as low as 14 degrees in the winter.

Our biggest negative weather occurrence is high wind during the winter months which can cause power outages, which of course translates to no computer! With the bad is always good and we love it here.

Patti started raising miniature donkeys in 1989. The first two purchased were Zasu, a six month old spotted jennet and Shasta, an 8 year old in foal. Both of those girls can be found on the ranch today. Shasta is 25 years old now and is still as spry as she was as an 8 year old. The next progression was in 1993, when Patti fell in love with a Mammoth Jennet named Moss and that began her Mammoth addiction. Moss has since passed but she left a legacy with her two daughters, Megan and Millie. Our goal at Mas Ass Acres is to show and breed quality Mammoth Jackstock. We breed for disposition, conformation, size and color if we're lucky. All of our breeding stock has been carefully selected from top bloodlines and can be traced back to Siemon's Glenn, Jen Jack and Black Bart.

In 1998, Mirage joined our ranch. He was a magnificent black and white spotted Mammoth Jack. It was my goal to breed Mirage to my three daughters of Siemen's Special Edition, a nearly undefeated champion spotted jack from Washington. We were expecting our first foal from this combination in October 2003. Two more were to follow in April, 2004. Sadly, Mirage had to be put to down on April 10, 2003.
Mirage

When I bought Mirage, he was in a chronic state of laminitis and had been severely foundered. His previous owner had not taken very good care of him. He was fed alfalfa and sweet feed and his feet were rarely trimmed. In the five and half years that we owned him, we tried everything humanly possible to save him, but it just wasn't possible. He eventually got an infection in his coffin bone and there was nothing left to do.

Mirage has left a huge hole in our hearts. He was a trooper through it all and he never gave up. He gave us a beautiful spotted jack foal in 2001 to be his replacement. His name is Mirage's Remade in the Shade or "Rits" as we call him. He has a very big halter to fill and so far he is doing a pretty good job.

Mirage contributed to the American Mammoth Jackstock by leaving quite a legacy of champion stock. Heart B Lonesome Me is one of his sons and he has been Grand Champion Jack in several states and his mule foals have been world champions and undefeated in halter. Mas Ass Acres Milagro "Millie", started her show career with a bang... 2002 Grand Champion Jennet/Gelding, Oregon Mr. Longears Show and 2002 Reserve High Point Performance, Western States Donkey and Mule Show.

Rits competed at Bishop Mule Days in 2002 and 2003 as a Yearling and as Two-Year Old. He consistently placed 3rd in his class competing against the same jacks both years. We are very proud of him and look forward to standing him to mares and approved jennets beginning in 2004.

If you are planning a trip to the area, please come for a visit.
